Flying Blind on Miriani?

So, this is sort of in the same vein as my other topic about combat on Miriani (which, by the way, yielded amazing answers that were very helpful). My other character got to be quite a good gunner, both in solos and with other people.

But I rerolled and didn't think much about it until, as trite as it sounds, I figured out that my character's highly-prized ambition is to become a BC pilot. Which would be great if I could actually fly, but I kind of can't.

So ... Any tips? I can fly solos easy enough since it's just 6464 (or it was, I don't know what it is with the new combat system), but everything else sort of eludes me.

Thanks for any help,

Alison

I know you posted this six days ago, but I use triangle patterns. 2 6 7 , 1 6 8, 4 3 8, but you can't rely on patterns. that'll do you for easies, but a lot of it gets to be intuition. you visualize it in your head and deviate from those patterns. try the triangles in easies. flying is a lot harder now that they've revamped the combat system.

That's a fine method in missions but in other situations...you'll need to be creative.

As people above have already stated flying paterns is not a good way to learn to fly I believe that patterns are bad because while you are constantly moving a highly experienced opponent will quickly read your pattern and destroy you in combat. While the NPC's on Miriani are not as difficult to fight as actual human pilots most of the time the new system does make it much more difficult to fly patterns while flying against NPC's without losing a ship. The easiest way to learn to fly is by being aware of your surroundings. When I fly I picture the tiny area around me as a cube a cube composed of a height of 3, a whith of 3 and a length of 3. At all times I remember that there can only be 26 coordinates around me in which I can be in range of what I'm fighting. While fighting NPC's think of the npc ship as the center of your cube. I will continue on another post.

Anyhow, if that ship your fighting is the center of your cube you now have 26 areas in which you can be in order to fire on that ship. When I fight I normally like to begin above the enemy ship or below it since that gives me the easiest time staying in range and remembering where the ship I'm fighting is. Be aware of what each key will do when you fly. If your enemy is at 4 4 4 and your at 4 4 3 then you can now hit 9, 2, 1, 7, 8, 9, 4, 3, 2, and have not patterned at all but are still in range of the enemy ship. While this might not work well if your fighting an experienced pilot in pvp I assure you it will definitely work while fighting NPC's. Its difficult to actually teach someone to fly since I believe a person must picture a sector and then learn to be aware of where every single coordinate is in relevance to the rest of the sector in order to learn to be a good pilot. I apologize if the post was complicated and not helpful at all but I do hope its helped even a tiny bit. Best wishes.

Both of you, that has helped immensely.

Ghost, yeah, it was a little complicated, but I had also never considered it that way before--maybe because I got used to always being at 3, 3, 3 and rarely changing my z coordinate at all if I could help it. Which is a bad habit, I know.

Anyway, I've always had trouble keeping coords in my head. I have trouble visualizing the sector in my head at the same time I'm keeping the coords of my enemy in mind, flying, and shooting. That's probably the biggest thing I have to work on.

Thanks again.

Not to be annoying or anything...
But couldn't this type of Miriani-related stuff be brought to in-game boards ooc/general/

Hi, good advice, I am zeel Kaven on marriani, also keep in mind for a bc pilot you myust gun, eng, fly when taking the test to gt your bc. This all adds to the complex combat system. You can bee the best but if you can not Eng or "repair" multy room" than your screwed not only against humans but againts praelor ools. Something to keep in mind sense I am at the stage in Marriani I am trying to get my bc. Hugs to those who play marriani.
